A brief history of R M S Franconia*:

The RMS Franconia was a Cunard Line ocean liner that operated from 1922 - 1956. Her maiden voyage was between Liverpool & New York in June 1923. This was the route she travelled in the Summer until World War II. In the Winter she was used on round the world cruises. In 1939 she was requisitioned as a troopship. On 16th June 1940 she was damaged by near-misses from German bombs. At this time she was en route to St Nazaire as part of Operation Ariel. Operation Ariel was the evacuation of the Second British Expeditionary Force from France. On returning home she was repaired in Liverpool. She took troops to India & was involved in the landing of troops in the Azores, Italy, North Africa & Madagascar as well as taking part in the Norwegian campaign.

In 1945 she was used as the headquarters for Winston Churchill at the Yalta Conference.

She also has a wonderful history of returning US troops & refugees at the end of the war. After VJ Day she was used to bring home British troops from India.
