Mappin & Webb Guilloche Enamel Powder Compact Art Deco Compact Mirror 1922

A unique high quality powder bowl in the original presentation box, commissioned by Mappin & Webb in 1922. This superb antique powder compact is signed "MAPPIN & WEBB LTD". It is fully hallmarked "G W L & CO ( G W Lewis & Co.), anchor (assayed at Birmingham) lion passant (sterling silver) date year X (1922)". The whole compact is in excellent condition. The beautiful lid has the most gorgeous and subtle cream guilloche enamel which is without losses or fading. The enamel is an even colour. Set top, an impressive lapis lazuli cabochon which is more breathtaking than I have managed to capture with my camera. The exterior and the interior are vermeil. The compact is without damage. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. The mirror is framed by a gilded bezel and it gives a perfect reflection. The beautiful down puff pristine and unused has a celluloid ring attached to a blue silk backing. The base is signed and fully hallmarked. The ancient crimson presentation case is in remarkably good condition. The lid bears the royal coat of arms and reads as follows "MAPPIN & WEBB LTD. (MAPPIN BROS INCORPORATED) Diamond Merchants & Art Jewellers, LONDON, W." An ancient piece of tissue paper still inside the case. Measures almost 5 cm & weighs 51.3 grams. More silver vanities.

A brief introduction to Mappin & Webb Ltd.
Queen Victoria granted a royal warrant to Mappin & Webb in 1897 which was the year of The Queen’s diamond jubilee. And since then the silversmiths has held a royal warrant to each of the five subsequent sovereigns. In 2012 Martin Swift who is one of the craftsman at Mappin & Webb was also appointed The Crown Jeweller. Their association with royalty continues. They were taken over by Asprey & Co. in the 1980s. The Company is now a brand owned by the Jewellers Goldsmiths group. Today Mappin & Webb currently holds the Royal Warrant as Silversmiths to HM The Queen and to HRH The Prince of Wales.

In 2015 a sterling silver statue of The Duke of Wellington is commissioned by the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards to commemorate Waterloo the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

In 2016 one hundred years after its first issue, Mappin & Webb reintroduces the legendary Campaign watch to honour the sacrifice of servicemen past and present.
