Solid silver cigarette cases CLERC 950 silver cased cigarette case
Clerc need no introduction however it is such a story here is a brief outline:
Charles Rémy Clerc was the owner of the luxury jewellers / jewelers bearing his name. In 1874 the premises were at Rue de la Chaussee d'Antin. The high quality of the pieces & acumen of Charles meant that the business grew & the business combined two establishments with the first store. It was situated at the corner of the boulevard des Capucines & la place de l'Opéra, as you know a highly prestigious address. Charles worked hard to build three stores for his three sons, Charles, Paul & John. Tragically, his son John was killed in the war of 1914 & his father Charles Rémy Clerc died of grief in 1915 . His wife continued to run the business with Charles. The business was world renowned. In 1932 Charles went bankrupt & he sold his business to a syndicate led by Antwerp diamond merchant Joseph Liebman who took over control of the Clerc brand & properties. Joseph Liebman had to take wise steps to keep his business from the hands of the Nazis & this is another story which will be told in one of our historical fact sheets that we produce with each sale for the new owner.
This a higher grade of silver than sterling silver - .950 grade solid silver case (sterling silver is .925). The cigarette case is fully hallmarked & signed 'CLERC PARIS'. A gorgeous authentic Art Deco piece in the original signed case. A high quality accessory made by one of the best! On images one & two the gilt lettering in reflecting on the case.
This super case is large, measuring 10.4 cm X 8 cm & so it is large enough for modern cigarettes & business cards. The lid & base have smart engine turned Art Deco designs that match perfectly - bold & fine vertical lines. The first two images show the lid, the third the base. The piece is exceptionally stylish & without damage or dings. The spring loaded catch works perfectly - the case glides open to reveal the fully hallmarked lid & base which are also numbered too '229972'. The case is also signed 'CLERC PARIS'.
As you would expect the original presentation case is luxurious. The dark maroon case is clad in watered silk with no wear or damage which is remarkable - just one tiny slight mark which may come out with a specialist clean. The interior is cream silk which is immaculate. The interior lid signed 'CLERC 4, PLACE DE L'OPERA PARIS MONTE-CARLO'. The clasp works perfectly.
