Rare Stratton Scone without an inner lid winter scene
To find this by itself would be a dream but this is complete with the original signed puff, sifter, pouch & also box. A collector's dream! The most wonderful Christmas present for a compact collector.
Number four in our all time top twenty vintage Stratton powder compacts.
A wonderful rare Stratton in superb condition. We are all familiar with Stratton's wonderful "Scones" first manufactured from 1948 with inner lids but this is so rare a "Scone without Inner Lid". The Stratton "Scones without Inner Lids were documented in a 1948 Stratton advertisement but they were not listed in catalogues in the 1950s or else where. The "Scones without Inner Lids" were sometimes decorated with printed silk which was produced to look just like an oil-painting. You just have to marvel at Stratton's ingenuity just look at the silk lid on photographs one & two & yes it looks just like an oil painting. The lid is as pristine as the day it was made over 65 years ago. This really is the most adorable vintage powder compact. A little log cabin covered in snow, snow drifts surrounding it. All dominated by the magnificent snow covered mountain range in the distance.
Lift the lid on the gorgeous vintage compact & you will see an excellent mirror with a few tiny hard to see age spots. The mirror bezel is signed "STRATTON MADE IN ENGLAND". There is a brilliant white pristine sifter in the powder well. This compact has never been used. The original puff is unusual & the first time I have seen one of these very rare compacts with all the original features. The puff has a fleece like quality & it is signed "Stratton" on leather made to look like snake skin. The pouch is made from high quality felt, beautifully sewn & perfect. The box is good but understandably after all this time protecting the compact has some signs of wear at the edges. This compact must be been a collector's piece it has been so well looked after. The powder well is gilded. The gilding shows no signs of use neither does the rest of the compact. The only flaw is a tiny bit of gilding on the left handside at the edge is a little rough. The base is decorated with a fine spiral just like the "Scones". All credit must go to Juliette Edwards for her wonderful
"The Stratton Key", her work on the complete Stratton archive which enabled me to identify this rare compact.
This vintage powder compact measures 3".
