This took our breath away when it came up for auction and it was so important that the lift -out annular ring was still in place as it is signed " STRATTON NON-SPILL PAT 407085 MADE IN ENGLAND ". This vintage loose powder compact is unlike any we have seen before or since and it captures a remarkable moment in time. It was made in the 1930s and we believe strongly that it was made in response to the Sutton Hoo find. The ship-burial, believed to date from the early 7th century was excavated in 1939. This is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological finds in England. Just to show you how precise and thorough this firm were, the compact is fashioned from pewter. This material has a strong association with the Vikings. Examples of Viking (Norse) pewter have been found and the preference at this time for this material was because of the relatively low melting point ( in the range of 750 F ). The low melting point enabled the Vikings to fashion items using a small fire and no special equipment.
The compact is remarkable for its complete departure in style from any Stratton vanity we have seen. The lid and base are fashioned from pewter and have the most delightfully simple design but there is also a feeling that this belonged to an earlier time, despite being made in the 1930s. The lid is primitive art and we are delighted to have had the pleasure of owning this compact for a very brief time, as it was purchased within a few days of its arrival. The absence of more photos is because we did not list this live online for sale. The mirror is framed by a bezel. The interior contains a lift-out annular section which would contain the powder to a certain extent. As you can see from image two the lift out section has a hole in the middle which is where the puff would be kept.
