What a wonderful present for your fiancee or wife - a vintage 1940s Elgin American Love heart compact mirror.
In the mid 1940s the Illinois Watch Case Co subsidiary Elgin American produced a series of heart shaped powder compacts aimed at the St Valentine's Day market.
This one must be one of the most collectible as it shows Cupid - the icon of St Valentine's Day seated & holding strings with winged hearts attached to them.
All around Cupid are the words "I love you" in eight different languages.
The ones I know are "I love you", "Je t'aime" (French) ,"Te amo" (Spanish), "Ich liebe dich"
(German), "Ja cie kocham" (Polish). The background to all of this is brushed gold tone.
It is a superbly well made compact & in very good condition considering it is over 70 years old.
The lid lifts easily to reveal an excellent mirror with a teardrop shaped bezel. The inner lid is beautifully ornate & signed "Elgin American MADE IN U.S.A.
The base is brushed gold tone.
