Rare Vintage Stratton Puff And Loose Powder Compact 1950s Refillable Loose Powder Compact

The first thing that drew our attention to this mid-century signed Stratton vanity was the delightful and rare puff. Then we realized that the compact was far from ordinary. It is an unused and early prototype 'Scone' model. The dimensions are those that you would expect for the 'Scone' but open the compact and there the similarities end.

The interior is quite different from the normal appearance of the 'Scone', 'Corona' and 'Regal' models. The inner lid is not what you see in the later 'Scone' models. It is devoid of the engine turned design and cartouche bearing the 'Compact-in-Hand' logo. Instead we see an attractive satinized gilt surface. The catch is also different. The ping open catch for the inner lid bears the inscription 'PAT. NO. 530653'.
                                                                                                                                               
The mirror bezel is signed 'STRATTON MADE IN ENGLAND'.  Another intriguing thing about this loose powder compact is, unlike other 'Scone' powder compacts, it has a felt insert all the way around the powder well which is in place of any sifter. The felt forms a seal when the inner lid is closed. The wonderful puff is signed 'STRATTON' and it is unlike any we have seen before. It has a typically English scene of Bulrushes and water in the foreground, large birds flying over head and hills in the background. The puff top appears to be synthetic leather (leatherette).                                                                                                                  

The original pouch is present. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. The mirror gives a good and accurate reflection. The lid is like the icing on a cake - very beautiful satinized gilt enamel with a diamond cut highly stylized floral motif.  The compact is in excellent condition and as it was lacquered during the manufacturing process it will retain its beautiful appearance without the need to be ever cleaned.

Measures 3 inches diameter. Weighs 88.9 grams.
