The most captivating and exceptionally rare Stratton Scone without Inner Lid. More gorgeous compact mirrors.
The lid is hand painted silk, rendered to look like an oil painting. This is an ideal gift for the most particular collector or as a 12th (silk) wedding anniversary gift, when only something unique will do.
Joint number two in our all time top twenty vintage Stratton powder compacts!
This remarkable compact mirror is all the more appealing as it has never been used and it comes with the original accessories, all of which are pristine. A wonderful rare Stratton vanity in superb condition! We have all seen the Stratton 'Scone' model which is fitted with an inner lid. However, this is another model of 'Scone' entirely, which was made without an inner lid. This model is rare and only documented in 1948. The 1948 'Scone without Inner Lid' model sometimes had lids made from silk. As the silk lids were often not protected by a cover, those few that were produced were often ruined because the owners did not use the pouch to protect them. This means very few of the small amount that were made are still around today. From year to year we do not see this model come up for sale and then this little gem appears! We have never seen this lid decoration before. It is divine! The most quintessentially English scene you could imagine. This scene is hand painted silk. It looks like an oil painting. A timbered cottage set within the most delightful and typical cottage garden. The borders a profusion of native British plants. A neat path leads up to the front door. Perfect in every detail, the cottage has tiny leaded windows, a plain green wooden door and what appear to be salmon pink and pale yellow walls. Some of the roof tiles are covered in moss. Behind the dwelling tall trees complete the scene. The imagery captures the peaceful rural idyll of mid-century England perfectly. The lid is like the day it was created. There isn't any loss of design or fading. The edge of the lid is lacquered brass with an engine turned design. The whole item was protected with a layer of lacquer at the point of manufacture which means it will never tarnish or need to be cleaned.
Lift the lid & you will see an excellent mirror which gives a clear and accurate reflection. The mirror bezel is signed "STRATTON MADE IN ENGLAND". There is a white velour edged sifter in the powder well. The original puff is unusual. It has a fleece-like quality & it is signed "Stratton" in cream on pale blue leather which is textured. The blue leather has cream accents. The pouch is made from high quality felt, beautifully sewn & perfect. This compact must have been a collector's piece as it has been so well looked after. The powder well is gilded. The gilding is vibrant just like the day it was made.
The base is decorated with a fine spiral.
This vintage powder compact measures 3" and weighs 64.3 grams.
