An enchanting and rare Stratton ballerina themed powder compact. This 1950s musical powder box plays La Ronde superbly well. The legendary ballerina Nadia Nerina is depicted on the lid, dancing as The Black Swan (Swan Lake). There isn't any enamel loss or fading. The minute detail on Nerina’s costume & even her face show an attention to detail which is delightful. The scene is from a photograph taken by the society photographer Sterling Henry Nahum whose professional name was Baron. In his thirties he noted that his ballet/ballerina photographs were most appreciated & so he was often at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. This mid-century music box comes with the original features - presentation box, pouch, the original stickers, puff and sifter. The music box, pouch, puff and sifter do not have any traces of powder. The original presentation box is interesting, as still has the original stickers. One reads 'THORENS Swiss Movement La Ronde no.4'. The other sticker gives the item code '865/309'. The interior box lid is signed 'Stratton "Musica" Compact'. The cardboard outer box has done a good job of protecting this vanity and the cardboard does have signs of use. The music box is in good condition and will not need to be polished, as it was lacquered during its crafting. The mirror gives an excellent clear reflection. The original mirror stickers are in place, as is the stopper sticker. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. Measures 3 1/4 " and weighs 167.9 grams.
