Rare Nadia Nerina Stratton Princess powder compact 1950s
This is one of the most sought-after Stratton ballet powder compacts.
This vanity is rare & depicts the Prima Ballerina, Nadia Nerina, who was one of the worlds most famous ballerinas. She was born on 21 October 1927 in South Africa. She moved to England and joined the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, where she became a prima ballerina at the age of 25. Fabulously talented, she was one of the first western dancers to appear with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow during the Cold War.
She retired in 1969 and passed away in 2008 at her home, in France.
This very special powder compact shows the lead ballerina, Nadia Nerina, as the Black Swan in Swan Lake. The enamel lid is very beautiful and minutely observed. There isn't any enamel loss. The lid is signed "Baron" which was the professional name of Henry Nahum Sterling (1906 - 1956) the celebrated society & court photographer in the United Kingdom.
Lift the lid to see a bevelled mirror which gives a good and accurate reflection. The inner lid is decorated with the "Compact-in-Hand" logo & attractive vertical lines.
The original signed box, pouch, puff & sifter are present.
The base is decorated with the famous Stratton all over star design.
This rare collector's piece measures 3 inches diameter & weighs 89.5 grams.
