This is an amazingly rare & lucky find.
The lid is exquisite - nearly 90 years old - & it is just stunning! This vanity was made in 1929.
Imagine taking a photo one inch away from an eighty eight year old compact ...............which is image one....................and the piece still looks this good!
This is powder compact is so rare we have only ever seen one before. Probably the earliest celluloid ballet themed vanity you will see. The celluloid lid is adorned with ballerinas with the palest pink, salmon pink and red tutus with blue bodices which match their hair. It is testimony to the maker, Gueldy and the durability of celluloid that the lid has no loss of design and that the colours are still vibrant. Variegated green leaves contrast with the ballet costumes and golden sashes are attached to the foliage. Two of the golden sashes are signed " GUELDY PARIS " and two " BAL des FLEURS ". Each one of the sashes have blue birds with golden eyes perched upon them.
The exterior brass is also in very good condition - gleaming. The lid lifts with ease to show an excellent mirror which gives a good accurate reflection. The whole interior - bezel, lid and powder well are beautifully gilded. The powder well is very beautiful being the reverse image of the base which can be seen close-up on photograph three. Another delightful aspect of the antique powder compact is that the original powder pan is still in place and it still contains the aroma and tiny traces of the powder. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The base is signed " GUELDY ", gilded and has the most gorgeous engine turned design, as you will see on image three.
