Extremely Rare Unused 1950s Stratton Glamorizer (Early) Powder Compact
An extremely Rare Unused 1950s Stratton 'Glamorizer (Early)' powder compact. This delightful creation features Piccadilly Circus, London on the satinized lid. This is the only time we have ever found the 'Glamorizer (Early)' model. Needless to say we are thrilled to have this highly collectible accessory in our collection. A huge bonus is that this rare vanity is unused and all the original features are present - presentation box, thick black felt pouch, instruction leaflet and big chunky version of the Stratton 'luxury puff', made especially for this model which is chunky too. All the brass is lacquered and so it will not tarnish or need to be cleaned. The whole piece is delightful. The lid is signed by the artist Flory Mackay. Such an enchanting representation of the night life in mid-century London - showgirls in their finery, people dining / dancing, balloons, stars, ballet shoes, musical notes, cafes, bars and what is known as the statue of Eros, which is actually The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, a winged statue of Anteros (Eros' brother) set atop. In Greek mythology Anteros was the god of requited love, literally "love returned". There isn't any loss of design. There is no archival information about this model, except a 1957 catalogue which states that it had been discontinued. The golden mirror frame is signed 'STRATTON MADE IN ENGLAND'. This compact has an unusual hinged clip. The base is decorated with circular bands of stars. The whole compact is gleaming clean and gorgeous! A wonderful collector's piece! All clasps and hinges work perfectly. Measures 2 3/4" and weighs 79.9 grams. More compact mirrors.
Even the original box is in good condition. A custom made recess holds the compact securely in the box. The item code 365/380 is stamped on the base of the box. The instruction leaflet is so adorable! It reads - 'Glamorize your pressed and cream powder by encasing it in this Stratton pressed powder Glamorizer P.T.O. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Lift the frame out of the box, then put in the tray of pressed powder and secure in position by replacing the frame Patent applied for Made in England P.T.O.'
