We have run out of stock for this item.

A unique antique of great charm made in the late 1800s. Hallmarked silver cases. This solid silver case is made from high grade .950 silver. It is fully hallmarked & in very good condition. Nineteenth century French silversmiths are famous for the exquisite allegories, fables & the like depicted on cases. This one is exceptionally fine. The lid shows probably the most well known proverb 'Mighty oaks from little acorns grow'. In the background is a magnificent oak tree in relief & finely engraved. The most detailed & exceptionally well observed foliage - a pumpkin & the vegetation associated with squashes. In the foreground a well executed simply dressed man who gazes in wonder at the tiny acorn he holds in his left hand. The whole piece is an objet d'art you have to handle this to appreciate the skill this silversmith used to created this unique & highly collectible solid silver case. The base is the most gorgeous Art Nouveau scene all in low relief of a butterfly flying near vegetation which can only be from the pumpkin. To the left a cartouche in the form of a scroll. As you would expect from a superbly made French antique all clasps & hinges work perfectly. Push the thumb catch to activate a spring loaded catch that still works as powerfully as it did back in the day. The case still has gold elastic straps in place. Both the lid & base are hallmarked & the maker's mark is clear. See image five. The maker is Emile Grénet. Measures 3 1/2 " X slightly over 2 1/4" & weighs 94.1 grams.
