An extremely rare fully hallmarked antique French sterling silver and niello vesta case in good condition. It is so difficult to source hunting themed collectibles. The lid has a plaque with chamfered edges. An exquisitely beautiful niello hunting scene is shown in fine detail. The Master of the hunt astride a magnificent Hunter with a docked tail, blowing on his horn. The foreground & background decorated with trees and vegetation. As you would expect from a French niello piece it is high quality. The front, sides and back are engraved with tiny diamond shapes. The back has an elaborate cartouche in the shape of a scroll with floral motifs behind it. The maker is Louis Morteveille his mark very clear to read "L une hache M" - L an axe M. This vesta case was made c.1901. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. Measures 6 cm X 2.8 cm and weighs 15.9 grams.
