Here is a little gem! The Saint Louis Peter's Shoes Company used Weatherbirds image for promotion from 1907 to 1932. They also produced many promotional items like postcards, whistles & even baseball bats. Many people can recall the Weatherbird children shoes. By 1905 this company had moved from ninth to third in the country in shoe production in America. Peters Shoe Company had continued to grow and its products sold all over the United States and even in Europe. The two largest shoe companies in the city Roberts, Johnson & Rand and Peters Shoe Company merged in 1911 to form International Shoe Company but each company kept its own identity. Peters Shoe remained in its own building with Weatherbird Shoes on display until 1930. In this year the company moved into what had become the International Shoe Building. Washington Avenue became known as "Shoe Street U.S.A." because it "claimed more shoe trade than any other street in the world".
Here is just one such promotional antique. An adorable 1920s compact decorated with laurel leaves & signed 'PETERS WEATHERBIRD SHOES' on the lid. Gleaming brass throughout & such a nice surprise when you lift the lid - the original unused pale pink puff, protective paper & a full pan of the palest face powder. The mirror is excellent & gives a perfect reflection. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The base is smooth gold tone.
This rare compact measures 1 1/2" & weighs 22.2 grams.
