This is a remarkable find!
A French made elopement compact made c. 1940. Without doubt French medalists show the most outstanding skills working in precious and non-precious metals. This compact mirror was fashioned by one such artisan and he signed the compact too - the thumb catch is signed " BRUNCE ". His pieces are rare as we have never seen this compact before nor can we find another other piece by Brunce. The lid shows the happy couple on the roof top, seated on the chimney holding hands and gazing into each others eyes. The ladder used is just behind them and the roof top scene is enchanting. The crescent moon in the sky, nearby fluffy clouds and below rural cottages surrounded by trees. The compact is in good condition. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. The mirror gives an excellent clear and accurate reflection. The mirror is framed by an elegant bezel engraved with scrolls. The base is decorated with a technique which resembles a fine and subtle hammered effect.
The rarity and subject matter make this compact highly collectible.
This delightful compact mirror measures almost 7 cm & weighs 59.2 grams.
