In 1882 Karl-Wilhelm Lutz and Friedrich Weiss became partners & set up a company manufacturing silverware, gold & silver chains.
Before the end of the century the company was a leading manufacturer of silverware & cutlery. Their business was located in Pforzheim - the gate way to the Black Forest.
This city is famous as a center of jewellery making - so much so that it was known colloquially as Goldstadt ('Golden City'). The name of this firm is familiar to many collectors, especially those who adore Art Nouveau but nothing had prepared us for this case!
Made in the late 1800s we have not seen anything like this before. This .800 silver fully hallmarked figural case is a rare find indeed. The lid & base have in relief the head, wings & body belonging to a mythical creature - a dragon - the wings of a bat & scales on his head - an ancient Jugendstil dragon! The spine running down the center of the case has scales in relief. The case has a huge amount of very dark patina which we will make no attempt to clean off as we think certain very rare antiques should never be cleaned. The patina is a sign of the great age of this superb case. This piece is in excellent condition with no dings. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. Push the thumb catch & the case glides open to reveal a beautifully gilded interior with serial numbers for the case design on both the lid & base 'G.M.155413'. The dragons impressed designs visible. If you hold the interior case up to a bright light you an see a tiny slither of light coming though one side of the spine. The case in no way unsound & this is being mentioned to create an accurate listing - so tiny many would not even notice. A gold elastic strap still present. The hallmarks clear & easy to read.
A remarkable find!
The antique silver case measures 9 cm X almost 6.3 cm & weighs 69.9 grams.
