Antique Pembroke College celluloid powder compact rare Stratnoid compact

£165.00

This compact is suitable for use with loose face powder or as a handbag mirror.
What a splendid antique gift for those who have an association with Cambridge University. Stratnoid was the brand name the company used to market its wares like knitting needles & early loose power compacts before its accessories were known by the brand name of Stratton. This charming antique compact is highly collectible as it is celluloid Stratnoid loose powder compact which bears the coat of arms of Pembroke College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, England. The college is the third-oldest college of the university. Celluloid was often used as substitute for ivory. This lid has the pearlized finish which has an ivory like quality & and any non-animal substitute for ivory is a good thing. The compact is in superb unused condition. The lid is especially beautiful & it is decorated with the coat of arms for Pembroke College. The coat of arms belonged to the founder Mary, daughter of Guy de St. Pol & widow of (Aymer de Valence), the Earl of Pembroke.

At the top the word 'Pembroke' & at the bottom 'FOUNDED AD 1347'. Barry of ten argent and azure ( ten silver and blue horizontally divided parts) although on the coat of arms the silver is represented by white, an orle of martlets gules - a martlet in English heraldry is a heraldic charge depicting a stylized bird similar to a swallow. An orle is a border - the marlets are placed in a design that follows the shape of the shield. The word gules means the tincture red. This part of the coat of arms is for de  Valence. For St. Pol - dimidiated with, Gules three pales vaire (pales - a fence) and a chief or with a label of five points azure. The coat of arms was confirmed to the college at the Visitation of 1684. There is no loss of design, the lid is highly durable & without damage. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The mirror is excellent & gives a clear reflection. The rotating powder well lid is typical of Stratnoid compacts. It works perfectly & is signed 'STRATNOID REG. DESIGN No 767198 MADE IN ENGLAND'. An adorable unused fabric puff with a pink silk sash is in place. The base is also beautiful - an engine turned design of wavy lines. The base is inscribed 'MADE IN ENGLAND'.  Measures 5.2 cm diameter. Weighs 38.3 grams.
