Edwardian Hallmarked Silver Calling Card Case Aide Memoire 1909 Film Prop
A delightful Edwardian hallmarked sterling silver calling card case / aide memoire assayed at Birmingham in 1909.
This item has been used and it has multiple signs of use on the lid, interior and base.
In our opinion this case is not gift quality but it is an ideal film prop.
The lid and base have a border engraved with the Greek key design. This design is also called meander or meandros. It is constructed from a continuous line & shaped into a motif which is then repeated. AKA the Greek fret design although this & the name Greek key are modern names. The ‘meander’ is said to represent the twisting & turning of the Meander River in Asia Minor. The meander can also be described as a linear form of labyrinth. The ‘meander’ was considered one of the most important symbols in Greece. It symbolized infinity, unity, eternal love & friendship.
The lid also has highly stylized engravings. The original finger ring and chain are attached. The interior is very sound and original too - pockets for calling cards... a pencil holder and the original writing surface which has the following written on it -
Sunningdale ...spencer.....
All catches and hinges work perfectly.
Measures almost 4" long x 2 3/4" and weighs 99.4 grams.
