Rare powder compact Stratton bird series Wedgwood compact 1970s
A beautiful vintage Stratton which was such a surprise to find. More compact mirrors. We have seen the Wedgwood Stratton 'Queen Convertible' compacts before but this is different. The lid decoration is a rare sight on a compact. Normally the 'Mini-Convertible' models have a flat lid decorated with engraving or plastic decorations. This one is constructed in an entirely different way. The lid has a built in frame in which the Wedgwood Jasperware plaque is held securely in place. Another unusual characteristic about this compact is that the mirror has both a frosted glass border and a bevelled edge. Stratton reserved the bevelled mirrors for the models of compacts that were more costly to produce. I have not seen this compact for sale before I purchased this one. The lid is the most beautiful Jasperware with two birds on a reed bed. They could be ibis but I am going to consult the staff at the Wedgwood museum to see if they are able to help me identify if this lid decoration has a story. The whole compact is very clean and in excellent condition. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. The mirror is very good and gives an excellent reflection - a couple of tiny pin prick age spots on the mirror that are hard to see. The waxed paper insert is gleaming white. The base is decorated with vertical lines and tiny chevrons.
