A magnificent fully hallmarked Edwardian 9 carat rose gold keepsake locket which was crafted by Albert Ernest Jenkins and assayed at Chester in 1909. This wonderful heirloom is ornately engraved with deeply symbolic motifs. The front of the locket is embellished with acanthus leaves which frame an elegant shield cartouche. Within the shield the initials HR or RH are inscribed with a florid font associated with this era. The initials are so ornate that they enhance the appearance of the locket and whilst they can represent a person's initials they could also be used as a romantic acronym. The shield denotes a desire to protect the recipient. The acanthus leaves which feature on the front and the back of this locket represent immortality / enduring life. The back features an elaborate composition of acanthus leaves interspersed with ivy leaves and forget-me-not flowers. Forget-me-nots symbolise true love and respect. Ivy leaves represent fidelity, commitment and loyalty. This splendid Edwardian gold locket is paired with an ornate eighteen inch necklace, so that it can be worn immediately. Both items are in superb condition. The catches and hinges work perfectly.
Both of the original frames, portrait protectors and backings are in place and so portraits or locks of hair can be attached easily.
