Vintage Italian Hallmarked Silver Enamel Compact Mirror Trinket Box Apollo Aurora
A wonderful mid-century fully hallmarked Italian silver and enamel compact mirror. The lid of this charming vintage powder box is embellished with a scene taken from Aurora: A Painting of the Coming Dawn by Guido Reni. The scene depicts Apollo in his horse drawn chariot which is flanked by the Horae (goddesses of the hours). Phosphorus, the god of the planet Venus is shown as the Morning Star. The light-bringing Phosphorus bears a torch. On the far right Aurora is shown with her clothes blown about by the billowing wind.
The enamel is very beautiful and in excellent condition. No enamel loss or fading. The scene is bordered by silver gilt bright-cut engravings and enamel panels rendered to look like turquoise lapis lazuli. All sides and the base are adorned with silver-gilt bright-cut engraving.
The lid lifts to reveal a lovely gilded case, mirror and mirror bezel. The bevelled lozenge shaped mirror gives a reflection which has age related haze. The catches and hinges work perfectly. The maker's mark and silver purity mark are stamped inside the case.
Measures 9.1 cm x 4.2 cm. Weighs 65.2 grams.
