An ornate Georgian Pinchbeck locket with a 20 inch necklace. Exceptionally beautiful Rococo scroll work and engravings adorn the locket on both the lid and base. A little work of art! The lid (image one) has the most adorable pansy form flower, a blank cartouche and delightful Rococo ornamentation. The lid opens to reveal a compartment containing hair art. The base is no less ornate - absolutely stunning engraved designs delight the viewer! The locket is in superb condition. We have included a super fine and elegant sterling silver necklace which has the most beautiful yellow gold plating so that it is a good match for this locket. The locket measures 2.8 cm high x 1.8 cm. The necklace measures 20 inches long.
The locket and necklace are presented in a pristine velvet clad jewellery case
In the Georgian era gold was 18 carat and completely out of the reach of most people. It was not until 1854 that 9 carat gold was legalised.
Many people wanted to wear gold jewellery and early in the 18th century a London based clock maker and jeweller, Christopher Pinchbeck, invented Pinchbeck which looks like gold and yet is affordable to almost all people. It is testament to the skill of Christopher Pinchbeck that this adorable pendant still looks so glorious two hundred years after its creation.
Pinchbeck also became sought-after by travellers who dared not wear their gold jewellery whilst travelling in coaches along the highway. If highwaymen stopped their coaches they would hand over their Pinchbeck jewellery more easily than their gold.
