A fully hallmarked 9ct gold Victorian fob in superb condition. The fob is the 'classic' bloodstone / heliotrope (green jasper) with red inclusions of hematite. The swivel fob works perfectly. It was assayed at Birmingham in 1896 & what an elegant talisman it is! The red inclusions resembling spots of blood, hence the name bloodstone. It is also known as 'Christ's Stone'. The Victorians were well aware of the magical properties which have been attributed to heliotrope since ancient times.
Courage, passion, vitality & strength are the qualities bloodstone it is said to imbue.
This antique gold fob would also make an ideal pendant.
The other side is set with the famed talisman, the carnelian. It is deep red. The carnelian is chosen for these qualities, which is said to pass on to the wearer - physical strength, boldness and courage. As you would expect the carnelian has been worn by warriors since late antiquity. The carnelian is a deep mellow red.
This large fully hallmarked 9 ct gold fob measures 3 cm high X 2.3 cm & weighs 5.5 grams.
