This splendid Victorian 9 ct gold fob is fully hallmarked. This is a swivel fob which works perfectly. It was assayed at Birmingham in 1897 & what a wonderful talisman this is! The whole piece is in superb condition. The fob is set with a blood stone & a carnelian. In ancient times Heliotrope / Bloodstone was admired as the most beautiful of the Jaspers. This gem has also been called Christ's Stone & the qualities it is said to carry are the purity of blood, vitality & strength as well as courage & passion. It is considered a powerful talisman that protects the wearer.
Legend has it that the 'Blood Stone' was formed when Jesus Christ was crucified & his blood fell on to the green earth & turned it to stone. Another legend is that the blood of Christ from the spear injury fell on to Green Jasper lying at the foot of the Cross. It is not surprising that this gem is symbolic of noble sacrifice.
In ancient times carnelians were given to those who needed to become bold. Warriors wore carnelian around their necks to give them great physical power & courage.
